RILEY STREET MIDDLE SCHOOL BAND NEWS

9/02/17

Dear Riley Middle School Parents:

Welcome to one of the most amazing learning activities available to your child! We strongly believe that band offers a unique place for every student to grow not only musically, but also socially with their peers. There have been many recent scientific studies that have shown a direct correlation between a child’s music study and improvement in language development, math skills, and improved test scores. Equally important, music study enriches a child’s experience and interest in the performing arts. When you add to this the experience of working with a large group of peers for a common goal, Middle School Band is truly an amazing experience for students!

Please take a moment to review the following important notes:

  • Please drop off your Family Fare and D&W receipts in the Riley Street Band room! Once we collect $150,000 in receipts, Spartan Nash will donate $1,000 to Hudsonville Bands.

  • All Riley Band students have been given a 2017-18 Band Guidelines that outlines much of what we do in class. If you have not had a chance yet, please take a moment to review this material with your child. Especially note the concert dates on the last page of the Guidelines. The last page also has a slip we are asking each parent & child to sign and turn in to Mr. Sheckler by September 8th.

  • Welcome to Mr. Andrew Buikema to the Riley Street Middle School Band! Mr. Buikema joins us as our music assistant paraprofessional and will be assisting during 6th, 7th and 8th Grade bands. Mr. Buikema brings his 14 years of experience as a successful music educator to help our students reach their full potential as musicians.

  • 7th & 8th Grade students will be receiving All-State Band Audition material on September 5th. Auditions will take place the last week of October and we encourage any student who may be interested to consider this experience. The MSBOA All-State Middle School Band is made up of the best middle school musicians from all over the state of Michigan. If selected, students will perform at DeVos Hall in downtown Grand Rapids in January during the 2018 Michigan Music Conference. Interested students will have the opportunity to receive additional instruction during TCB, before school or after school preparing for the audition.

Thank you for your time and support of your child in the Riley Middle School Band. If you have any questions please contact me through email or at my office phone.
